Looking for something fun and not-so-frightening to do this Halloween? The City of Los Angeles is a great place to explore!
Home to some of the nation’s most popular cultural hotspots, Los Angeles has many historic neighborhoods for you to visit this Halloween. Whether you’re looking for tricks or treats, the City has some great places to experience the spookiest day of the year. Check out the featured neighborhoods below and other historic neighborhoods on our Office of Historic Resources website.
Trek up to the hilltop residential area of Angelino Heights to feel like you’ve taken a time machine to the late 19th century. This area is home to beautiful leafy hillsides with some of the best remaining examples of Victorian-era architectural styles in Los Angeles, as well as later examples of Craftsman and Mission Revival Style homes. Residents of this area don’t skimp on Halloween candy or decorations either! If you decide to stop here for some trick-or-treating, you can also get a glimpse of the 1300 block of Carroll Avenue, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places for having the highest number of 19th century Victorian homes in Los Angeles.
Looking for your sugar fix? Head on over to Hancock Park, known for being one of the most popular trick-or-treating destinations in the country. The community also has beautifully designed two-story, single-family residences in numerous Period Revival styles including Tudor Revival, English Revival, Spanish Colonial Revival, Mediterranean Revival, Monterey Revival, and American Colonial Revival. Major candy stops are on Rossmore, Las Palmas, and Hudson—so make sure you bring those extra bags and wear comfy shoes!
Check out the evolution of early residential architecture of the San Fernando Valley in Van Nuys. From Craftsman and Colonial Revival styles to later Spanish Colonial and English Revival, Minimal Traditional, and California Ranch styles, the Van Nuys community has a lot to offer! Head over to Katherine and Lemay off Hazeltine to see parts of the area’s Historic Preservation Overlay Zone.
Venice Canal Historic District
Looking for your “boo” by the beach? Row on over to the Venice Canals! The original canal system served as the hub of the coast city and was part of a past beach resort called “Venice of America.” The historic canals get a ghastly glow from local lights making it a perfect place for some romantic Halloween fun!
