Fall 2019

Since our Fall 2017 and Winter 2018 outreach events, we have continued to engage with the Boyle Heights Neighborhood Council (BHNC) committees, including the Transportation and Environment Committee, the Historic Preservation Committee, and other community-based organizations, and have attended monthly South Coast Air Quality Management’s District Community Steering Committee meetings for Assembly Bill 617. In February, we attended the Eastside Small Business Conference & Expo that was sponsored by the Boyle Heights Chamber of Commerce. In July, we attended a Community Planning 101 training organized by Eastside Leads and InnerCity Struggle, two community-based organizations in Boyle Heights. We also attended a two-part Community Planning 101 training organized by the BHNC’s Land Use Committee in September and October. In addition, in November, staff engaged with two Project Based Learning (PBL) classes at the Boyle Heights STEM Academy to talk about planning issues in their neighborhoods. We want to extend our appreciation to all the stakeholders who attended these events to learn more about the Boyle Heights Community Plan Update. And thank you to everyone who stopped by our table near Mariachi Plaza during CicLAvia in early October – it was great chatting with all of you!

We continue to receive feedback on the draft zoning concepts and draft Policy Document. Over the past year, stakeholders have continued to highlight issues surrounding housing, design and environmental uses, open space/parks, and mobility, including affordable housing, rent control, historic preservation, improved transit services, access to open space and healthy food, as well as residential and business displacement.

In the coming months, you will have the opportunity to review the Boyle Heights Affordable Housing Community Benefits Strategy, the proposed zoning, and a revised Policy Document based on the feedback we have heard.
